What is Dry Needling?

Similar to Chinese Acupuncture, a thin, flexible filiform needle is used to insert in to the skin. However, dry needling is used specifically to target and release trigger points. This is more specific than neuromuscular techniques. It is used to target pain associated with injuries and is extremely effective when used in conjunction with other techniques in a sports massage treatment.

What is Medical Acupuncture?

Medical or Western Acupuncture concentrates on the anatomical points of the body rather than the circulation of "Qi" , or concepts of Yin and Yang practiced in Chinese Acupuncture. It targets the vascular, muscular and neurological systems to stimulate and promote healing in the damaged soft tissue.

How Does Western Acupuncture Work?

When a needle is inserted, it starts an inflammatory reaction, causing redness, heat, swelling and some pain. Blood flow increases to the site. Oxygen saturation improves and continues to do so for 30 minutes after the removal of the needle. The technique causes changes to the tissue, stretching the fascia and incites relaxation if the needle is left for some time. Ultimately the technique provides long lasting pain relief. It triggers the release of opioid chemicals, relieving pain, decreasing pain reaction/perception and increasing pain tolerance. Pain suppression occurs across the body and isn’t limited to the injury that the technique is being used for.

Recent medical research has shown over time that medical acupuncture is effective at reducing menopausal symptoms including hot flushes and disturbed sleep. IBS patients have stated that acupuncture has alleviated some of their symptoms resulting in further scientific research and how acupuncture can help treat IBS.

How Does V-Active use Acupuncture?

Needling is not used for everyone and isn’t used for every treatment. The treatment is provided based on an assessment and that the symptoms are suitable for the technique.

At V-Active Sports Therapy we listen to our clients. The treatment plan is always discussed with you. If you don’t want the technique or have a phobia of needles, that’s ok, this technique won’t be used!

If you are happy to have this technique as part of your treatment, a pre-medical questionnaire is completed and signed following an explanation of the effects of the needling and associated risks prior to the treatment.
